IDG’s InfoWorld has announced that it will end its print run, shifting its focus to online and events.
InfoWorld’s staff, though aware that the print version’s time was short, apparently hadn’t been officially informed and found out via reports in the San Francisco Chronicle and Silicon Valley rumor blog Valleywag, paidContent reports (via MarketingVox).
“InfoWorld is not dead. We’re not going anywhere. We are merely embracing a more efficient delivery mechanism - the Web,” wrote Editor-in-Chief Steve Fox. There will be few layoffs, as most of the staff will move to the online or events sections of the publisher.
Former InfoWorld veteran Matt McAlister discusses the move on his blog: “IDG is doing a smart thing if merely experimenting with the model for how to move entirely online for the rest of the ‘fleet.’ Somebody had to step forward, and InfoWorld is as well positioned to make that transition as anybody.”
