More than 40 states already permit digital displays on billboards, and Indiana may soon become the 41st.
The state, which has approximately 12,500 billboards, is holding a General Assembly meeting to consider whether to allow digital billboards and electronically controlled vinyl billboards, writes The Indianapolis Star. A bill allowing such billboards has already been passed in the House and Senate. If passed by the General Assembly, it could take effect July 1.
Videos and flashing images will not be allowed, and images must stay on the screen for a minimum of eight seconds, longer than the current six- to eight-second industry standard, according to state Rep. Dan Stevenson, (D-Highland). Stevenson is the bill’s main sponsor.
