Technorati is now tracking over 70 million blogs, with about 120,000 new blogs created worldwide each day - or 1.4 blogs every second - according to the latest State of the Blogosphere report from David Sifry (via MarketingVox). Splogs (spam blogs) remain a problem. Technorati has been tracking 3,000 - 7,000 new splogs created each day.
There was a significant spike in splog creation in early December, and some 11,000 splogs were created each day in December - 341,000 splogs were removed from Technorati’s indexes that month.
Since the previous State of the Blogosphere report, in October 2006, the doubling of the size of the blogosphere not surprisingly took longer as a result of the law of large numbers, according to Sifry - to double from 35 million blogs to 70 million or so took about 320 days, whereas (for example) doubling from 5 million to 10 million blogs took about 180 days.
Posting volume is also growing more slowly, at about 1.5 million postings per day. That’s about 17 posts per second. In October 2006, Technorati was tracking about 1.3 million postings per day, about 15 posts per second.
Blogs continue to become more and more viable news and information outlets. As of April 2007, the number of blogs in the top 100 most popular websites (based on the number of links to them) has risen substantially from the third quarter’s 12. There are now 22 blogs in the Top 100 news and info sites.
