Following Don Imus’s insensitive comments on his Imus In the Morning Radio show, which resulted in his firing, the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network has issued a number of recommendations to the recording and broadcast industries.
Russell Simmons and Benjamin Chavis, leaders of the network, said that the recording and broadcast industries should voluntarily censor the words “bitch” and “ho” and the “racially offensive” n-word from future recordings, writes Mediaweek.
The two also recommended the formation of a music industry Coalition on Broadcast Standards, which would recommend guidelines for lyrical and visual standards within the industries.
They suggested that the industry establish artist mentoring programs and forums to stimulate effective dialogue between artists, hip-hop fans, industry leadersa nd others to promote understanding and positive change.
At least one radio station owner has already taken steps to ban potentially offensive lyrics. Roberts Broadcasting Co. is banning music with lyrics that are violent, sexist or racist on its Jackson, Miss., radio station.
