Officials from the Taxi and Limousine Commission of New York City are meeting today to discuss and possibly approve the deployment of multimedia touch-screen digital displays across its entire taxi fleet.
The screens have been installed in a small number of cabs as an experiment; the touch-screen displays have been touted as a way for passengers to pay using credit cards, writes MediaPost. But the displays also provide information about nearby neighborhoods and businesses.
If ads are also sold on the screens, ad revenue could help offset high gas prices, perhaps keeping fares low, says the city agency.
The chief objection to the displays is the cost of installation, which ranges from $5,000 to $7,500 per cab. The Taxi and Limousine Commission has considered the idea of sharing ad revenue with drivers.
