Borrell: Automotive ‘Fat Times’ a Thing of the Past

The “fat times” are over in automotive advertising, according to a new report from Borrell Associates, with traditional media losing share as manufacturers and dealers put more money into their own websites.

In the last five years, auto advertising grew at a compound annual growth rate of 3.7 percent to $31 billion, writes Editor & Publisher. Over the next five years, growth will slow to 1.7 percent, and Borrell predicts that by 2009, online auto advertising will surpass newspapers, cable, radio and direct mail.

Newspapers could lose as much as 24.6 percent of auto advertising by 2011, while direct marketing could lose 21 percent.
