Thanks once again to American Idol - though ratings declined in recent months - Fox will win its third consecutive season among 18-49s when the season ends tonight (Wednesday).
Fox’s 4.0 rating and 11 share comes in 0.3 ratings points over CBS (3.7/10), giving it the biggest margin of victory for any network in five years, writes Media Life.
Combined adults 18-49 slipped 6 percent compared with last year. While Fox slipped the least, it still ended the season down 2 percent from last year, and its 4.0 win is the lowest average rating to win a season in at least 8 years.
CBS was down 3 percent from last year, while ABC, in third place, slipped 13 percent, from a 4.0/11 to a 3.5/9. NBC was down 6 percent, to a 3.1/8.
Fox’s American Idol in the last two months declined from last year, but was still by far the highest-rated show on television. American Idol’s Wednesday edition averaged a 12.3 rating while Tuesday averaged a 12.1, down a combined 3 percent from last year. However, the averages of many other shows declined even more. Last year, for example, the No. 3 show (behind both editions of Idol) was Desperate Housewives, which was 28 percent behind Idol. This year, the No. 3 show was Grey’s Anatomy, 34 percent behind Idol.
The Drudge Report points out, somewhat gleefully, that last night’s Dancing with the Stars pulled higher ratings than American Idol. Dancing scored a 16.5 rating/25 share, while Idol pulled a 16.3 rating/25 share. Dancing also pulled the top slot in cities such as Chicago (32 share) and Philly (33 share).
If declines in other shows, such as 24 - which will end the year down 9 percent from last year - continue next season, and if Idol continues to slide, the network could have a difficult time maintaining its No. 1 standing.
