Webcasters Play Sounds of Silence to Protest Copyright Hikes

Webcasters have planned a day of silence for June 26 in order to protest the new royalty rates that the Copyright Royalty Board intends to put into effect on July 15.

Internet radio stations are saying the new copyright rate hikes are disproportionate and that they will shut down the web radio industry, writes WebProNews.

On the 26th, thousands of webcasters plan to go either totally silent or to play static, ocean sounds or similar fare, punctuated by public service announcements telling listeners what is happening.

Participating stations include Yahoo, Rhapsody, MTVOnline and Pandora, as well as many local offerings.

The royalty board announced a new fee structure in March after webcasters failed to reach an agreement with the owners of music copyrights on a new royalty system. Many internet radio companies have said that the new royalty structure will force them out of business.
