Sci Fi Shows Sliding in Syndication

Casual science fiction fans, who used to get their fill of the genre from syndicated TV and cable, would seem to be filling up now on broadcast TV, what with shows such as ABC’s Lost, NBC’s Heroes and the CW’s Supernatural all having a heyday.

With such fare available on broadcast television, sci-fi in syndication is sliding, writes Media Life.

Smallville, for example, has seen ratings decline 17 percent season to date through last month, compared with last year (from a 1.8 to a 1.5). Stargate: SG-1, a Sci Fi channel drama, has plummeted 25 percent, from a 1.6 to a 1.2, and Stargate: Atlantis has slipped 14 percent. Other sci-fi offerings have also slid.

One theory for the slide is that, while hard core sic-fi fans are still watching these shows, casual fans find enough sci-fi on broadcast. Another theory is that Smallville and SG-1 are aging shows, and it makes sense that viewers are leaving, while shows such as Atlantis and Farscape simply had strong first seasons but couldn’t maintain momentum in their second syndie outing.
However, science fiction offerings aren’t the only syndicated fare that has slipped. Syndication as a whole has had a soft year.
