Gap Launches Leibovitz Blitz

Gap has named Glenn Murphy, previously chairman and CEO of Canada’s Shoppers Drug Mart, as CEO, and is launching a new campaign featuring photography by Annie Leibovitz in the hopes of stanching the drop in sales numbers that has been the trend in recent years.

The campaign, from Laird + Partners, features black and white photos of celebrities sporting Gap’s fall line, writes Brandweek. June sales numbers show a drop of 4 percent, a continuation of what has become a downward trend for the clothing retailer.

The print campaign will run in September issues of Vogue, Vanity Fair, Lucky, Interview, GQ and Dwell. There is also in-store, online, outdoor and direct mail elements.

This marks the first campaign under the company’s new president, Marka Hanse, who replaced Cynthia Harriss in February. Hanse intends for the company to be more focused on a consistent demographic: consumers aged 24-34, with the “sweet spot” around 28.
