For the first time since trade marking the Polo name in 1967, Ralph Lauren is sponsoring a polo team in the U.S. The Black Watch team, based in East Hampton, NY and Palm Beach, Fla., are wearing uniforms designed by Ralph Lauren, and the company has also introduced a Black Watch line of clothing for consumers, writes The New York Times.
The relationship between Polo Ralph Lauren and the actual sport of polo has been an edgy one. In the last decade, Ralph Lauren has sued the United States Polo Association for trademark violations on several occasions, and the association has sued back.
Lately, for example, Ralph Lauren said that four logos with polo players - that the polo association had licensed to clothing maker Jordache - infringed upon the Polo trademark. A jury approved three of the four logos, but Ralph Lauren has appealed and the case will go before the U.S. Court of Appeals in October.
In addition to sponsoring the U.S. Black Watch team, Polo is also, for the third consecutive year, sponsoring the United States Open in Queens and has, for the last two years, sponsored Wimbledon.
