Couric’s Iraq Visit Doesn’t Help Ratings

CBS News’s Katie Couric reported last week from Iraq; the move didn’t help ratings. The news broadcast tied a record low last week, pulling just under 5.5 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

Last week and Memorial Day week have been the two least-watched CBS evening newscasts since 1987 at least, writes the AP (via TV Spy).

CBS points out that the US Open was played last Friday, pre-empting local news and, many viewers may have assumed, Couric’s broadcast, as well. Without Friday’s broadcast, the week would have averaged just under 5.9 million, or about where it has been in recent months.

Meanwhile, NBC is claiming that the NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams has closed the gap with ABC World News with Charles Gibson to just 26,000 viewers. For Labor Day week (Sept. 3-7), NBC’s newscast drew 7.781 million total viewers, while ABC averaged 7.807 million, according to Nielsen.
