ABC, which has said it is changing its game plan of primarily distributing its programs on its home page and will now embrace outside syndication, is moving forward with that plan by announcing a deal to distribute its prime time shows for free on AOL beginning today, writes the Wall Street Journal (via PaidContent).
The ABC/AOL agreement calls for the sharing of ad revenues between the two. ABC will also allow for the geo-targeting of ads in order to compensate its ABC affiliates who might have lost revenue from fewer TV broadcast viewers. There will be three national ads for each hour of programming.
The move is part of a string of maneuvers by the networks to explore alternate distribution channels. CBS created its own online distribution network this past spring, while NBC Universal is beta-ing its own desktop video download service, NBC Direct, which allows users to download shows for free. In October, NBC and News Corp. will begin testing their online video site, Hulu.
