Tesco’s new Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Markets are due to open in the U.S. in November. Forty-eight stores are planned for the inland region of Southern California that encompasses Riverside and San Bernardino, writes Just-Food.com.
Stores are also planned for a November launch in the Phoenix and Las Vegas areas. About 30 additional stores are planned by February, with another 100 in the pipeline expected to open in the next few years in California, Arizona and Nevada, according to MediaPost.
The company plans to employ between 1,500 and 2,000 people in its Riverside distribution center in the next few years.
It looks as though the Fresh & Easy chain plans to take on Whole Foods. Private label Fresh & Easy products will be free of trans-fats, artificial colors and flavors. They will also contain only restricted amounts of preservatives.
Safeway plans to open similar, smaller-store formats if Tesco does well.
