Kansas City Hopes to Halt Digital Billboards

Kansas City officials are expected today to vote to halt the erection of 31 digital billboards within the city limits.

The City recently passed a law prohibiting new billboards on city streets, imposing stricter standards on the location of new billboards on highways, and outlawing digital billboards and the conversion of existing billboards to digital, writes the Kansas City Star.
The law was placed on hold because a petition drive was attempting to force a vote on the issue. The City Council Transportation and Infrastructure Committee voted to recommend that the full council approve the measure. However, a Platte County judge issued an injunction in August on a separate billboard issue that allows for the installation of digital billboards.

An attorney for Lamar and CBS Outdoor told the council that the latest proposal would run counter to the Platte County ruling.

Digital billboards are continually running afoul of city councils and anti-blight groups across the country, who claim the boards are unsafe and unsightly. The industry seems unfazed and emerges from most of the scuffles victorious.
