CBS did not win the opening week of the new television season in households for the first time in several years.
ABC inched ahead of CBS, averaging a 7.9 rating and 13 share for the week ended September 30, writes Media Life. CBS was just behind, with a 7.5/12. It was the first time ABC won in households in an opening week since 1994.
Fox, ABC and NBC have traded the lead among adults 18-49 for the last four years, but CBS has held tightly to No. 1 in households and adults 25-54. If the shows that ABC has yet to premiere turn in strong performances, CBS may be looking at losing that title.
ABC tied with NBC for No. 1 in adults 18-49 in week one, and came in first for adults 25-54 with a 4.6/12 (CBS and NBC tied with a 4.3/11).
ABC’s chances to keep the leads look good. If Cavemen and Carpoolers flop, the network is expected to expand Dancing with the Stars by up to an hour, which will give it a stronger Tuesday night. Too, some CBS shows - including The Unit, Shark, CSI: NY and Criminal Minds - are looking much weaker than last year.
CBS has also already premiered most of its schedule, while ABC still has three shows to launch, as well as the returning drama Men in Trees. If any of them take hold, CBS could be further hurt; if they don’t, ABC still has Lost coming at mid-season.
