Amazon, eBay, Wal-Mart Top List of Most Popular Shopping Sites

An online poll from BIGresearch of online shoppers and their favorite shopping sites indicated that the sites that come to mind most readily when thinking of online retailing are indeed some of the most popular. However, there were some surprises on the list.

The most popular site was Amazon.com, followed by eBay and Wal-Mart.

Five of the remaining top 10 were major retailers from the offline world - Best Buy, JCPenney, Target, Kohl’s and Sears - indicating the success large traditional retailers are having with adopting multi-channel sensibilities, writes the National Retail Foundation.

No. 8 was Overstock.com. Surprisingly, Google was No. 9 - not a retailer at all. In fact, four of the top 50 favorite retailers were search engines, which indicates that perhaps the role of search is beginning to blur in the eyes of consumers. In some ways, search engines are becoming virtual malls, in essence a home base that aggregates a variety of retailers into one place.

Another interesting trend apparent from the list was the appearance of special-size apparel retailers like Lane Bryant, Woman Within, Roamans and King Size Direct.
