NBC Kicks off Weeklong Programming Effort, ‘Green Is Universal’

NBC is launching an initiative, Green Is Universal, that includes a week-long programming effort to educate TV viewers and web and wireless users on ecological issues.

The programming is part of a wider environmental initiative to be announced next week, writes Environmental Leader. Bravo president Lauren Zalaznick, who chairs the NBCU Green Council, says the intiative will include every part of the company (via Hollywood Reporter). NBC Universal already launched a Get On Board program in May, designed to reduce greenhouse gases and raise awareness.

NBC’s green work will kick off on November 5 with simultaneous live broadcasts from the North and South poles and the equator on Today. “Green” themes will be incorporated in shows such as Heroes, My Name Is Earl, 30 Rock and The Office.

“It’s a huge undertaking,” said Today executive producer Jim Bell, speaking about the November 5 show. Meredith Vieira will anchor what they’re calling the Ends of the Earth series from New York. Bell said that the technology has yet to be tried and will require “a little guesswork, a little prayer.”
