Spain Gets New, Left-Leaning Daily

A new, full-color daily newspaper, Publico, launched in Spain last month, aimed at left-leaning readers between the ages of 25 and 45.

The paper features a single headline and, at 0.50 euros, is half the price of its rivals, writes The New York Times. It also has nearly a third fewer pages than its rivals do and, unlike other mainstream Spanish papers, it carries no editorials, no coverage of bullfights, no death notices and no advertisements for prostitutes. It has been distributing 250,000 copies a day, and employs 120 editorial workers.

The trials that have fallen other newspapers in the U.S. and Europe have hit newspapers in Spain more lightly: the country, which has one of the fastest-growing immigrant populations in Europe, saw newspaper sales rise between 1996 and 2005, one of the few European countries to do so. Over the last two years, sales have fallen about 2 percent.

Broadband penetration remains, at about 15 percent, about half the penetration of leaders like Denmark and the Netherlands. Spain is also not struggling against free papers, as are other European nations. Rather than stealing market share, Spanish free papers are converting nonreaders into readers.
