Tribune Ad Sales, Weak in Q3, Helped by Telecom, Healthcare, CPGs

Tribune Co.’s television advertising sales were weak in the third quarter, with dips in the movies and automotive categories, along with the absence of political ads, helping speed the decline.

Gains in the telecommunications, healthcare and food/packaged goods categories helped to offset the declines somewhat, writes MediaPost.

TV had strong results at two of the company’s stations that have higher ratings - WPIX and WGN - thanks to new syndicated shows and the CW’s prime time fall launch.

For the company overall, retail and classified advertising dropped 6 percent and 18 percent respectively, writes the Orlando Business Journal. National advertising rose 2 percent. The largest decreases in retail advertising were at Newsday, the Los Angeles Times and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Classified ad dips were worst at the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
