According to 100 chief marketing officers surveyed by accounting and consulting firm BDO Seidman, this holiday season will be marked by more discounting and promotions than in recent years.
Seventy-three percent of CMOs say that discounting and promotions will be more prevalent this year due to the current credit crunch, says DM News; 64 percent of CMOs have said they have been more cautious in terms of their sales and inventory purchase plans.
More than half (54 percent) say that same store sales will be flat this year, while 41 percent predicted an increase. The overall average sales prediction for this season is 5.03 percent.
Concerns over credit have taken the top slot as the most crucial issue impacting holiday sales, cited by 27 percent of CMOs as the top concern. 22 percent of CMOs stated high energy costs were the top concern, while 17 percent chose the weak housing market. A further 15 percent cited product safety issues, and 14 percent said it was the stock market. Last year, high energy costs were the top concern of 52 percent of CMOs.
More than a third (37 percent) said there will be a bigger focus on green products than last year.
