Rupert Murdoch said today that he plans to make access to the Wall Street Journal’s website free. The move will be able to bring in more advertising, as instead of having 1 million subscribers, it will have “at least 10 million to 15 million, in every corner of the earth,” he said.
The current 1 million subscribers generate about $50 million in user fees each year, according to the AP.
Murdoch’s comments were made to a group of shareholders in Adelaide, Australia, where he began the company with a newspaper that he inherited from his father.
