Magna: Prime Time Ratings Could Slip 9 Percent Before Season End

Prime time ratings could slip by as much as 9 percent by the end of the season, and by 13 percent by the end of May, if the strike continues, believes Steve Sternberg, executive vice president of audience analysis for Magna Global USA.

By January the ratings decline could be about 5 percent, reaching 8 percent by March, Sternberg says (via MediaPost). Sternberg predicts a steeper decline in April and May because those are the months that networks traditionally beef up original programming. Repeats could be particularly harmful during those months.

In 1988, during the last television writers strike, ratings sank 9 percent. At the time, there were fewer TV alternatives for viewers to choose from.

What could help this time around, however, is the fact that viewers are accustomed to reality programming, which can be staffed by non-union writers. Too, viewers are accustomed to more reruns than they were in 1988. Back then, networks ran an average of 14 percent of prime time schedules with reruns. In the last three seasons, that percentage is up significantly, to 36 percent reruns.
