NBC Slips Significantly during Sweeps

Declines in television viewing in the 18-49 demo have been “awful” during the November sweeps, according to Lyle Schwartz, executive vp and director of broadcast research for Group M. The slide has been particularly steep for NBC.

NBC averaged 8.3 million viewers per night, down from 10.7 million last November, during the first 19 days of sweeps, and the network’s 18-49 rating is off 18 percent from last year, writes Media Life.

In the upfront, some buyers gave NBC “the benefit of the doubt,” said an agency executive who would not speak for attribution. “If these huge ratings declines continue, we will have to look at NBC with a more jaundiced eye.”

Across all networks, adults 18-49 are down between 13 and 21 percent, and total viewers have been off between 800,000 and 2.4 million per night.

Fox is averaging a 3.5 rating in the demo, up 17 percent over last year and 0.3 percent behind first-place ABC. For the week ended Nov. 18, it won a sweeps week for the first time since 1998. The network is the favorite to win the demo again this year, Schwartz says.
