More than a third of CMOs hope to become CEOs, and they’re well-positioned to take over the job due to the fact that they are required to oversee a wider spectrum of business strategies in the course of their work, according to a joint study by Forrester Research’s CMO group and executive recruitment firm Heidrick & Struggles.
The CMO has become a more strategic position, and CMOs want to get out of “the black box” of the marketing department, says Forrester analyst Cindy Commander, writes Brandweek.
Time management is one of the biggest hurdles in CMOs climb to the top. Less than 10 percent of their time is spent on career development, and less than 20 percent is spent on developing relationships with their executive peers.
