Harper’s Bazaar has partnered with Swarovski to create a special edition of its December issue. Five thousand copies of the magazine have amber-colored crystals affixed to the word Fabulous in the main cover line.
The copies are not being sold on newsstands and are instead being sent to VIPs in the fashion, beauty and media industries, writes Folio.
Harper’s Bazaar executives say the magazine does not violate the American Society of Magazine Editors’ rule against allowing a cover to be used to help an advertiser sell its wares. “The collector’s edition is not available on newsstands and is not sent to subscribers. It is an ongoing partnership of four years which is within ASME guidelines,” says a spokesperson.
A New York magazine spokesperson offered the same reasoning when questioned about its recent issue which included a 10,000-copy special edition. Those copies featured a four-page cover wrap advertising the New Museum; the museum’s name used part of the magazine’s logo on the cover.
