Late night shows on network TV have seen ratings declines of anywhere from 13 to 40 percent in key demographics in the five weeks since the writers strike began - and cable’s Cartoon Network may be benefitting from the strike as viewers bail on network TV looking for fresher fare elsewhere.
Cartoon Network’s quirky Adult Swim has seen its average ratings in its core men 18-34 and men 18-49 demos rise, writes Media Life. During the four weeks from Nov. 5 to Dec. 2, the show’s average, from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m., is up 17 percent to a 0.95 compared with a year ago among men 18-34. Among men 18-49, it is up 11 percent, to a 0.61.
However, says Brian Hughes, manager of broadcast research at Magna Global (which crunched the numbers), the shift reflects a growing trend that actually began before the strike began.
The late night shows skew older than Adult Swim, and younger viewers have begun shifting to the cable network looking for other alternatives, he says.
