Credit Suisse: Newspaper Woes May Be Easing

John Klim, an analyst with Credit Suisse, has released a report that contains more positive news for newspapers than the industry has heard in awhile.

The struggles that newspaper companies have undergone in recent years is likely cyclical, he wrote (via The Motley Fool).

Klim reminds investors that the economic woes affecting newspapers’ classified business will pass, and he holds out hope that there will be a recovery in the troubled real estate category, MediaPost writes. Though he gives neutral ratings for McClatchy, E.W. Scripps, Lee, Media General and Belo, that is more positive than many other analysts have seen for the coming year.

In the short term, however, Klim acknowledges the struggles newspapers have faced with declining circulations and reduced ad revenue, predicting that revenues are set to drop 5.8 percent in 2007 and 3.8 percent in 2008.

The New York Times Co. and Gannett are predicted to outperform the rest of the industry.
