In 2007, 389 new magazines were launched. Regional magazines topped the list (42 new titles) with such titles as Miami, Edible Jersey, and Garden & Gun, according to MediaFinder.com, an online database of U.S. and Canadian publications.
The next largest category for new magazine launches in 2007 was the luxury category, with 36 new magazines, cutting across many different subject classifications.
Another top category for new magazine launches was business (24 new magazines), with new titles such as St. Louis CEO and Conde Nast Portfolio.
Lifestyle, home and interior design, and ethnic magazine categories all had 16 new magazines in 2007, with new titles such as Lofts, Lodges, Zeba (Afghan) and Jewish Living.
The number of new magazines declined from 2006, when 498 magazines were launched. In 2004, 215 magazines launched, followed by 264 in 2005.
Folio points out, however, that the number of new magazines published depends upon who is doing the counting. According to University of Mississippi professor Samir Husni, who tracks launches on his website, there were 636 magazine launches. Of those, 221 published four or more issues, and 363 were special issues which may or may not come out with a second issue.
Both Husni and MediaFinder agree that there were fewer magazine launches this year than last.
