CBS and NBC have inked a deal with the NFL to nationally simulcast the Dec. 29 telecast of the undefeated New England Patriots vs. New York Giants football game, as the Patriots attempt to become the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to go undefeated in the regular season.
This is the first-ever three-network simulcast of a live NFL game, and the first simulcast of any kind since Super Bowl I in 1967, which was broadcast by both CBS and NBC, writes Adweek.
The telecasts will air with the same commercial load as is being aired on the NFL Network. Local stations carrying the game will get a few commercial units to sell.
Prior to the deal, the NFL Network had been selling its remaining commercial inventory in the game for more than $200,000 for a :30 spot, more than twice its regular rate.
Had the NFL not penned the deal with NBC and CBS, much of the country would not have been able to see the game, as the NFL Network does not have carriage on cable systems Time Warner and Cablevision. It is carried by some Comcast systems, but only on a special sports tier.
