Valassis, which until now has distributed coupons primarily through newspaper inserts and direct mail, is launching an internet portal for coupons called RedPlum.com.
From now on, in addition to its traditional paper circulars, the company will also use its circulars to drive people to the website, luring them with the promise of coupons and keeping them there with additional content, writes The New York Times.
Three people will be writing Consumer Reports-like product reviews and other content, and the company plans to bring on more.
Other features that the company hopes will help it to stand out from competitors such as CoolSavings.com, Coupons.com and ValPak.com, include the ability to plug in a shopping list and get a matching list of coupons, and to use the site anonymously.
The number of visitors to coupon sites is growing modestly. In the 12 months ending in October, visitors to coupon sites grew just 6 percent over the previous year, to 20.3 million, per comScore.
