Lillian Vernon Axes 25% of Jobs

Lillian Vernon laid off about 25 percent of its full-time workforce five days before Christmas, due to the postal rate increase and other factors.

“Basically, Fed Ex and the U.S. Postal Service reached down into our pocket and took out $8 million,” president/CEO Michael Muoio is quoted as saying in Multichannel Merchant. He says the decrease in value of the U.S. dollar also played a role.

While 2007 fall sales were better than 2006 fall sales, results did not meet the company’s expectations.
