Discovery Kids hopes that Bindi the Jungle Girl, a show that stars the 9-year-old daughter of the late Steve Irwin - otherwise known as the Crocodile Hunter - will become to the network what High School Musical has become for Disney.
In addition to the Discovery Kids show, Bindi already stars in a fitness video with her own backup dancers and tours the world making public appearances, writes The New York Times.
As Steve Irwin’s popularity rose in the late 1990s, so did the popularity of Discovery Communications’ Animal Planet channel. Executives hope Bindi will be able to advance Discovery Kids - a channel available in 60 million homes - in a similar way.
Bindi has already become a brand in her own right, with her name on products like backpacks, clothing and birthday party plates. She has appeared on Larry King Live, David Letterman, Ellen DeGeneres and the Today show.
Discovery Kids does not release hourly viewer numbers, but David Zaslav, chief executive of Discovery Communications, says, “We think Bindi will be a big, big star.”
