Nielsen to Clients: Take Responsibility for Your Own Encoding

Nielsen Media Research has sent letters to U.S. TV stations asking for their help in preventing any further glitches in the  company’s A/P (active/passive) coding system.

The letter, which follows several episodes of glitches in which stations end up under-reporting ratings, tells stations to review actions they can take to help ensure they are receiving “complete and proper credit for the tuning and viewing to your station,” writes MediaPost.

Some of the problems occurred at the station level with the “active” coding. However, even if there are glitches at stations, the A/P codes also have a passive component which is supposed to keep such reporting problems from happening.

Nielsen’s letter stressed to TV stations that it was important they properly maintain encoding equipment. “While Nielsen wants to work with you to minimize any such occurrence at your station in the future, it is ultimately your responsibility to encode properly,” the letter read.
