WGA Prez Says No Exemption for Oscars

Writers Guild of America West president Patric Verrone has said that he does not plan to grant the Academy Awards a waiver; without such a waiver, the Screen Actors Guild membership may opt to skip the Oscars as it did for the Golden Globes, not wanting to cross a picket line.

Verrone said that, though a request for writers to script the ceremony has not yet been made, the WGA voted in December to deny such a request if and when it is made, unless the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reach a deal, writes Broadcasting & Cable.

The WGA has also decided not to grant waivers to the recording industry for the Grammys. The reason for the refusal to grant waivers for both broadcasts is because the revenues from those broadcasts go directly to the conglomerates, according to People.

A spokesperson for the Academy says the awards show is proceeding as planned.

Other shows, such as the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the NAACP Image Awards have been granted waivers and will proceed as planned without the threat of picket lines.
