Enders Report: U.K.’s Digital Audio Facing Extinction

Digital audio broadcasting in the U.K. is in trouble unless the industry stops “beating its chest in public about the wonders of DAB” and instead engages in an honest industry debate about the future of the platform, says a report from Enders Analysis.

The high cost of transmission and slow revenue growth are causing stations to turn from the DAB platform, according to the report (via Radio Ink). Three of the largest radio groups - GCap, UBC and Virgin Radio - have reduced their commitment to the DAB platform in recent months.

DAB digital radio is not the same as the HD Radio platform used in the U.S. The BBC introduced DAB in 1990 and it is now used by an estimated 90 percent of the U.K. population. The DAB platform shares some characteristics with HD Radio, but the sound quality is less than that of traditional FM radio.

The report quotes Local Radio Company chief Richard Wheatley as saying, “DAB is the Betamax of radio.”
