The AP Board of Directors has approved a plan for a new rate structure, despite the fact that two groups of newspaper editors have protested that the new rate cuts don’t go far enough.
The new Member Choice plan expands the availability of breaking news stories while making other stories available on an a la carte basis, writes Editor & Publisher. While the AP says the new plan will save member newspapers some $6 million, editors believe the organization is not being sensitive enough to the financial distress of the newspapers and the industry.
“The Member Choice service constitutes the most important overhaul of AP’s pricing in the history of the cooperative. It will reduce assessments for 80 percent of papers; about 10 percent will remain the same; and, about 10 percent will see an increase, although it will be phased in,” AP said in a statement today.
The plan will be implemented in 2009.
