‘Dare’ Magazine Becomes London Freebie

British publication Dare has decided to stop charging $1 for the magazine and will become the first women’s magazine in the country to be given away for free.

Dare launched 18 months ago with a cover price of $1 and distribution in the 912-store strong chain of drug stores, Superdrug, writes Media Life.

With the move to free circulation, the magazine will go from distributing 271,000 copies to 750,000. Published every four weeks, Dare will be handed out in London tube stations and train stations between 6:30 and 9:30 a.m.

The goal of the new Dare will be to drive foot traffic in Superdrug stores. Clare Rush, head of print media at mediaedge:CIA, says that from a marketing perspective, the magazine is an efficient way for Superdrug to target consumers.

The magazine will, however, carry ads from companies that sell products in Superdrug. It will also include coupons.

Two free weekly men’s titles have launched in London in the past 18 months, one a lifestyle magazine and the other a sports weekly.
