A new rock station called The New York Rock Experience is replacing the Smooth Jazz format on 101.9 in New York.
The Emmis Communications Smooth Jazz format, which has been on WQCD-FM for 20 years, will be moved to an HD2 side channel, writes Mediaweek.
Blake Lawrence, program director of the new station (101.9 RXP Rock Republic), says the on-air personalities will play a direct part in choosing the music. “It’s unheard of in radio these days, but 101.9 RXP is about the music and not so much about the music business,” he is quoted as saying.
RXP will merge several rock styles and generations. It will also regularly play local rock artists. The website claims the station was created with three words in mind: Variety, intelligent and local.
It will compete against CBS Radio’s WXRK-FM, which pulled a 1.5 overall share in Arbitron’s fall survey.
With the Smooth Jazz format, the station had a 2.7 overall rating share, giving it a No. 8 overall rank.
“If they allow the DJs to pick the music and they stick with it and build trust of the audience, this will be a monster. K-Rock left them a huge opening by not doing Rock right and this will blow them out of the water,” said Rich Russo, director of broadcast services for JL Media.
Radio stations in the U.K. reacted with outrage when they learned of a report by researchers from the University of the West of England which accused them of promoting excessive drinking.
The study looked at 1,200 hours of radio output,…
