The NAB, continuing to whine about an XM-Sirius Satellite Radio merger, has asked the FCC to adopt a rule that will block the satellite radio companies from offering local content.
In a filing to the FCC, the NAB said that, as a combined company, the satcasters may have “a heightened desire to offer locally oriented programming, including local advertising,” writes Radio Ink. If the FCC adopted final repeater rules, it would block the companies from offering local content on their repeater networks.
The NAB suggests specific language for the FCC to adopt that reads: “SDARS repeaters are restricted to the simultaneous retransmission of the complete programming, and only that programming, transmitted by the satellite directly to the SDARS subscribers’ receivers, and may not be used to distribute any information not also transmitted to all subscribers’ receivers.”
