Ofcom to Conduct Spot-Checks of Call-In Shows

Britain’s Office of Communications (Ofcom) will begin making spot-checks of TV broadcasters to be sure they are complying with some new license conditions the independent regulator is putting into place come March.

The license conditions make broadcasters directly responsible for consumer protection and the compliance of premium rate services, such as PhonepayPlus, that allow for phone voting, writes the Guardian. Broadcasters will be required to obtain independent third-party verification of all systems used in premium rate service voting and competitions.

Premium-rate phone voting scandals and viewer deception was prominent last year across all major terrestrial broadcasters. Broadcasters face 3.5 million pounds in fines after it was revealed that callers were being charged for phoning in after competitions had already closed, Brand Republic reports.

Ofcom’s regulations, which take effect March 18, are expected to boost audience confidence in the U.K. broadcast industry.
