Stations See New Ad Opps with Digital Switch

Television stations see the conversion to digital TV next year as an advertising opportunity.

According to Harris Corp., a company that provides digital TV and high-definition TV technology, nearly 40 percent of the television stations it works with say they will expand advertising avails through digital multicast channels that will allow for more programming, writes MediaPost.

22 percent say the switch will grow local mobile TV programming, 31 percent say they will grow advertising efforts in terms of their internet programming business, and 66 percent are either currently producing or plan to produce within the next few years local commercials in the digital high-def format.

The switch to digital transmission from analog will take place on Feb. 18, 2009. According to Nielsen, 10 percent of households in the U.S. will be unprepared for the switch unless they buy a converter box or a new television.
