Television viewers are more engaged with local news than with other news media platforms, and local TV news websites are a frequent source of information, according to a Hearst-Argyle survey.
Hearst-Argyle president and CEO, David Barrett, said that 55 percent of viewers say local TV is their primary source of news information, with the internet coming in at 26 percent, writes MediaPost.
Behind search engines, local TV news websites are the most frequently used for news and weather, according to the survey.
Viewers go to local new sites 37 percent of the time, followed by 31 percent who go to cable news sites, 24 percent to reality TV video sites, and 23 percent to broadcast network news sites. But in terms of ad dollars spent online, local broadcast TV sites received only 9.3 percent of the $8.5 billion spent on local web advertising in 2007.
Newspapers received 33.4 percent of the local ad spend online, perhaps because there are more local ad salespeople working on local newspaper sites, said Barrett.
