AeroGrow Catalog Helps Company Reach Record Sales

AeroGrow International, Inc., the publicly-traded maker of indoor gardening products, reported that revenue for the nine-month period ending December 31 soared 305 percent, to $27.2 million, compared to $6.7 million for the same period the previous year.

According to Multichannel Merchant, the Boulder, Colorado-based company shipped more than one million seed kits since launching the company in early 2006 and its newly-launched catalog has helped the company attain sales records. The grower mailed 50,000 catalogs last June and saw that number skyrocket to 750,000 catalogs in the last four months of 2007.

John Thompson, the company’s vice president of investor relations, explained the sales numbers: “The catalog was a significant contributor both at the top line and bottom line in the third quarter and it worked amazingly well across a broad range of lists we tested.”

The company’s core product is the AeroGarden, which uses dirt-free aeroponic technology to create a rain forest-like growing environment. The system, which fits on a kitchen counter, is a hit with consumers because it allows customers to garden indoors year round and have fresh herbs, vegetables and flowers in the deepest pit of winter.

The company drops catalogs six to eight times per year and expects the total number of catalogs to hit at least five million this year.
