XM’s cost of acquiring new subscribers rose from $108 in 2006 to $121 in 2007. The company is now engaged in a push to promote XM and recruit subscribers via online channels in the hopes of reducing the cost of new subscriber acquisition.
XM’s revenues rose 20 percent in the fourth quarter of 2007 to $308 million, and 22 percent to $1.1 billion for the year, writes MediaPost. During Q4, XM posted a loss of $239, compared to $257 million in Q4 06.
It added 1.4 million new subscribers in 2007, for a total of more than 9 million. Sirius currently has 8.3 million subscribers.
To reduce acquisition costs, XM has begun to partner with Apple to make XM programming available on iTunes. Since XM began podcasting content in December, two of its podcasts are listed in iTunes’ top 10.
XM and Sirius are each counting on the proposed merger to help reduce subscriber acquisition costs. As expected, the companies have extended their merger agreement to May 1. According to analyst James Goss of Barrington Research, the Department of Justice review of the merger is taking an “unusual” amount of time.
