Smells Like Sweeps Spirit: Nets Promote Returning Shows Heavily

It’s beginning to feel a lot like sweeps as networks start hyping the return of shows post strike.

To remind viewers that it’s safe to stop watching QVC and lie-detector tests, networks will spend the millions typically seen in fall to promote lineups. All the hoopla may seem a bit much, kind of like spots for Target in December, Forbes writes. But execs believe it’s necessary to remind viewers that there’s plenty of season left and favorite scripted shows are on the way. NBC, for example, will start rolling out new eps of The Office, 30 Rock and My Name is Earl on April 3, while Heroes and Chuck will take a leave of absence until fall. NBC has even gone so far as to license the theme song from the John Travolta-launcher Welcome Back, Kotter.

ABC will leverage the Oprah reality show, The Big Give, and the new season of Dancing with the Stars to herald its returning shows. CBS wasn’t willing to share its marketing plans for the upcoming mini season.

Fox, despite its cushy American Idol position, will highlight returning favorites and four new scripted series.
