Readership Hemorrhaging Hits Top Papers, ‘USA’ Today Stands Tall

The past four years have been ugly for America’s top newspapers in terms of print circulation.

Editor and Publisher reports that the top 20 papers in the U.S. have lost a collective 1.4 million copies in daily circulation. The bloodletting has been rather democratic (about 10 percent across the top papers), but some papers such as The San Francisco Chronicle have seen precipitous drops (nearly 30 percent in daily circulation).

The Editor and Publisher analysis of data from the Audit Bureau of Circulations indicated that the Los Angles Times and the Boston Globe both lost 20 percent of daily circulation over the past four years. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution gave up nearly 17 percent and the Washington Post took an 8.8 percent hit. The New York Times is down just over 7 percent while The Wall Street Journal was down less than 4 percent.

There were a few trend-buckers: USA Today increased its circulation 2 percent and the New York Post grew 2.3 percent.

On the other hand, the online audience of newspapers is growing exponentially. According to Scarborough Research (via MarketingCharts) online audience growth is mitigating print audience losses by 28 percent.
