That cheering you hear from the science building is all the techies who just heard YouTube’s coming to TiVo.
YouTube and TiVo will soon roll out an option for subscribers to grab content from YouTube for playback on TiVo. Many companies are making similar steps, though no on owns the space yet. Over the last year, TV watchers have been able to view YouTube videos such as Sarah Silverman’s “I’m F**** Matt Damon” on TV via other devices such as Apple TV, writes the Los Angeles Times.
Though DVR pioneer TiVo uses a hard drive to capture its television content, the YouTube clips will be streamed by broadband internet. And because only 800,000 of TiVo’s 4 million users have the TiVo box and internet connection required for the video content, penetration will be low at rollout.
The video capability will be available at a yet-to-be-named date later this year, according to the New York Times. YouTube’s decision last year to open its platform to outside developers has made the collaboration possible.
TiVo beat analyst estimates to end the fourth quarter with a $6.4 million loss as expenses fell and older-model sales did well. The company anticipates growth in sales of stand-alone DVRs as consumers grab more content from the internet. Revenue could see a boost from its StopWatch service, which allows marketers to track commercials that TiVo devotees actually watch.
