A sparkling balance sheet has left CBS in the position to make some acquisitions; The Weather Channel might be a good fit if the price is right, the network’s president and CEO Les Moonves said during McGraw-Hill’s Media Summit this morning.
Facebook is not in the cards, Moonves said (via Broadcasting & Cable).
He touched on NBC/News Corp.’s Hulu (CBS will accomplish the same goals with its CBS Audience Network platform, though it will not rule out participation in Hulu), Katie Couric (she’s doing a great job and the media should be ashamed of reporting on her hair rather than her reporting) and March Madness (avails are nearly sold out and the company is heading toward a $23 million windfall).
Moonves said the fastest-growing division of CBS is outdoor, due partly to digital billboards.
Moonves’ optimism strikes a discordant note amid the doom-filled news about the economy; he claims CBS isn’t feeling the effects of the slowdown, though there have been “some hits” in the smaller markets, particularly local radio and TV. The company is hoping that international revenue will rise from about 10 percent to about 20 percent within the next three to five years, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
