Fate of Newsweeklies Still in Flux

Major newsweeklies underwent major changes in 2007, but it’s too soon to tell if the overhauls will have the hoped-for impact.

Both Time and Newsweek did serious tinkering in 2007; each mag went through redesigns, while Time also changed its publication date to Friday and cut its circulation.

But according to a new report from the Project for Excellence in Journalism, it’s too soon to tell if the changes will keep the newsweeklies healthy in a fragmented marketspace. The 700-page report, which examined multiple media outlets, stated that 2007 was a big year for newsweeklies to shift content online and focus more on opinion and analytical reporting, rather than just regurgitating facts that are easily found from free and up-to-the-moment sources.

The PEJ, as noted in Folio magazine, is a project of the Pew Research Center.
